I want to start visualy identifying as goth but not scare anyone too much. I know, wear what you like, but dressing in dark colors makes me happy. I'm starting to find clothes I like (black jeans/skirts, dark t-shirts and silver jewlery) but when I google "goth fashion" I get pictures of people who appear to have spent hours on their clothes and makeup. It looks beautiful, but I don't have the kind of time or money to dress like that, nor would it be very practical to walk around campus wearing layers of clothes, heels, and a corset.
What are some ideas for casual goth outfits that don't cost too much and are practical for everyday wear?

In winter I live in big jumpers of varying colours, jeans and boots. Summer, long floaty skirts, vest tops and sleeveless cardigans.

Try some DIY stuff. Go to a used clothing store, try to find stuff that's not faded and modify it yourself. This way everything you wear will be unique and no one else will have it.

Usually I'm in dark jeans and t shirts if I'm not literally at a club.
Don't be fooled by the cam whoring, that level of effort isn't practical for everyday and it's a rare person that sustains it at all times.

I come about as casual as they come. Wake up in the morning put on the black jeans and converse and find a band T and I'm good for the day. The last time I got all "gothed" up was last Halloween. And all I did different was wear a jacket and some pins. I don't have the time or money to pay for the clothes that I want nor do I have the skill to make clothes I want to. So I do the best with what I got, band tees lol

It takes time to get formal goth going on a budget.... 100% of my formal goth clothes are either from thrift stores or from over 5 years ago when I last had spare money for such things. And yeah, it's too much effort for everyday wear (not to mention the drycleaning costs when you spill your lunch on it). I mostly end up in full-length skirts and semi-formal tops... both worth about $5-10 at the op shop I work at.

I think I'll stick with black skirts/jeans with dark colored shirts. Maybe try some DIY stuff with old jewlery I don't wear anymore. I'm not planning on dyeing my hair or doing fancy makeup because, once again, not enough time or money for that.

While it's definitely fun to get all gothed up and fancy, most goths don't dress like that all the time. It's just not practical.
For my casual goth wear, I just usually go for flowy skirts (I never wear jeans... not my style), circle skirts (with petticoat underneath, lolita style) nice stockings, boots or shoes and a nice top or a band t-shirt. You can also easily dress simple outfits up with the right accessories or hairstyle, while still being comfortable. You basically just have to figure out what works for you.
